The other day i was working with another IT contractor on a User Interface project. He and I have worked well together in the past, and continue to do so, but i must say, we don’t really see eye-to-eye on this current project.
When it comes to web projects - I usually have been a big proponent of letting the business demands dictate the priorities for a web project. Exclude some bells and whistles until they are asked for, and focus on your core compentency. But with the creation and implementation of more user powered sites, I think the business model needs to change.
One of the hardest parts of creating a small business solution - is taking a chance on discovery. To quote the front of the Kauffman Foundation Thoughtbook, “Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought.” For a small business - you can’t wait for someone to ask for the solution - you need to be ready to deliver it. Be ready to communicate to your current customers as well as potential customers, that you have the solution for them. As business picks up - snag new business from competitors by seeing what they aren’t providing - and provide it yourself.
